My boyfriend and I love to invite people. We cook, we eat, we talk and we drink. Unfortunately since we moved in together (now for 6 years) we had only a small dinner table. If you ask: what is small? It’s a table were at best 6 people can sit but it’s only comfortable for 4. That’s small.
It’s fine for the most time aka for the two of us. But we had also to think about who and when to invite friends over. And that’s not a good thing.
The problem was that we didn’t find the right dinner table. It was either too expensive or not our style or only one of us liked it. The longer we looked the harder it seemed to get.
I once set my eyes on hairpin legs and loved them. But you could only order it online from the US and had to pay for shipment and customs. This put an halt on the whole search.
Until a few weeks ago. When I found out that there’s the shop Tide & Tand in Germany selling them too! Finally my boyfriend and I could agree on a table. I asked my uncle (who’s a carpenter) to make us a table top. Now we have this big (and heavy) dinner table. The top is made out of solid ash-tree wood and 2 by 1 m wide.
Because our top is solid wood it’s pretty heavy. Around 100 kg I guess (if you ask my boyfriend he’d say 150 kg – he helped carrying it upstairs).
If you’re worried that the legs won’t hold. They do. It’s actually really stable and solid. No wiggling, no moving. It doesn’t even shake when you bump into it. (I tried. Not on purpose. It hurt. Don’t ask.)
The quest is over!
My uncle also had the great idea to put those little wooden pieces at the bottom of the hairpin legs – this is perfect if you don’t want the metal scratch your floor.
This is a very affordable option for a DIY table. And it looks fantastic! It gives me the impression that the table top is floating.
I still can’t believe this chapter is finally over and I’m happy every time I look at the table! Now we only need new chairs… and so the hunting continues.
What do you think? Please tell me you also spend months/years and a lot of effort researching before you buy new furniture. I need this.
Now. Carry on!
The table looks fantastic, Sarah!!! So nice to see a bit of your flat as well 😉
I love hairpin legs and also researched a while ago where to get them in SA, with no luck unfortunately. I guess I have to be patient. But then I want a table just like yours. At least I got the perfect chairs already 😉
Thank you, Selina. As I said: it’s been a long journey!
I’m really jealous though that you have the right chairs already. Are you gonna show me? Please? Pretty please?
I hear you, same here.
Of course, I show you. I bet you’ll like them, too. You can see them here:
Those were also my favorites! But you can hardly get replicas here and the real deal is quite expensive… Also I thought about having many different chairs… I’m really indecisive. It’s horrible!
I hear you again. Decisions, decisions…horrible.
The idea of many different chaos is amazing, tho! Mix ‘n’ match, I love it! And it would really go well with your new table….very artsy.
Hope that helps 😉
