This year I tried to be so organized that I even can send out Christmas cards – to friends and family but also to my business contacts. As a one-woman-show all these important but not necessary tasks always fall through the grate. My standard is always to create cards myself and not just buy any – which has been a hurdle so far because it takes even more time that I normally don’t take.
However, this year everything’s different. Not only does it seem like I have more time at my hand but I also came up with an easy DIY Christmas card design that’s made in no time: basically I just take plain brown cards, drizzle some white paint on it, sew different triangles on, write “Merry Christmas” and that’s it. I make them in a bulk and it took me like an hour and a half to make 10 of those.
And you can see – with the paint and the 3D-effect that they are not just store-bought. Now, excuse me while I keep patting myself on my back for this idea.
All you need for these paper Christmas cards
- paper scraps in black and white
- blank cards and envelopes in brown
- white acrylic paint
- a paint brush
- scissors
- white paint marker
- sewing machine set with black thread
Take the paint marker and write “Frohe Weihnachten” or “Merry Christmas” or “Feliz Navidad” or whatever is your season’s greeting on the front of your card. If you’re not comfortable with brushlettering, you can print it on your computer, draw the outlines on your card and fill it in.
Cut triangles from your black and white paper.
Make sure they have the right size for your cards. You can do this with just positioning them on your cards. Then take them as your template for all the other triangles.
Fold them in the middle and put them aside for now.
Take the cards with the brushlettering, put some acrylic paint on a small plate and splash it on your paper. Make sure that the table is lined with scrap paper or newspaper.
Then take the sewing machine and sew the triangles on the front. Make sure you open the cards. This might sound like a stupid advice but I forgot on 2 cards and those are destroyed now. 😉
Finished! You can write your personal note now inside and send them off to all your friends and family.
Now. Carry on!
